They just don't make things like they use to.

I'm very irritated.

Not a good time to post, but oh well.  You may stop reading now if you desire.

Our dishwasher quit working the day we blessed Grace.  So that was February 1st.  It's been almost a month now.  This WHIRPOOL dishwasher is exactly 15 months old. This is the part where I get irritated.  It was covered by a warranty for 12 months.    My good ol' Dad came to my house after he was done with work one night and pulled it out and looked at it.  He read the parts manual.  Eventually he told me he thought it was the motor, but he was 100% sure.

Motors are expensive.

So, I finally called Whirpool.  They offered to cover the cost of the parts after I pushed a bit about the fact that it only 15 MONTHS OLD!  I had one of their hired out service techs come to the house today to diagnose the problem.   He literally walked in asked what it had been doing, pushed the start button, listened for 1 -2 minutes, turned it off, and told me it was the motor.
And for that fine service...$69.00.    He didn't know that Whirpool had offered to pay for the part so he had out his computer and calculated the cost for the part and his installation fee.

$565.00 he tells me.

"That's kinda high", he comments.  Ya think!  I'd just go buy me a new dishwasher dude.
So I inform him I have someone (Dad :)who will install it for me,  and had him tell Whirpool which part to send.  I paid him his ridiculous "$69.00 for 5 minutes" fee and send him on his way.  I guess I am just irritated that a company can charge that much for really 5 minutes of actual "work".

So now for the bright side.  As we've had to hand wash our dishes for nearly a month I've been able to spend a lot of time with my 2 oldest.  They help wash, or dry or put away when the littler kids have gone to bed and we stand with our hands in the suds and talk about school, friends, funny stuff, what they want to do this summer, etc. It's really a good time to just talk and enjoy each other's company.

So for that I thank you Whirpool.

p.s. Love you Dad.  You are the handy man's handy man!

I am sorry Amy. I feel your pain. Repair technicians are not my friends. I am glad Dad is handy and that your children enjoy doing dishes and talking, Way to find the bright side.

i AM SO sorry Aim! You did find the silver lining in that cloud though and that is most excellent of you. I love Dad too and he is indeed a very handy fella!

Well that's not a very good price if were per hour. These guys have seen your exact dishwasher and situation many a times. It is pretty annoying when all they have to do is glance at the problem and they fire off the problem. However like you said, hand washing dishes isn't so bad. That's been our only option here and I have to brag, I'm pretty efficient. Don't team up washing dishes and folding freshly dried clothes. Your hands won't forgive you. Sooo dry.

We've learned the joy of a good dishwasher just in the last 3 months of our marriage, and I can tell ya, I don't want to go back to hand washing. :)

Shawn refuses to do the dishes as a team. Beings how our kitchen is more like a narrow hall, I can see his complaint that I'm "just in the way". but its that good dish-washing bonding time that I'm after anyway!
Way to make it work in your house.
I hope you get that machine up and workin soon anyway.

I too hand wash and have in the past 22 years done it off and on depending on the machine in my current home. Sometimes I didnt even know I had a dishwasher. I've never had one repaired because of this and when we moved here I started the ol thing up and unloaded it twice before Mike informed me that no water was going into the machine and he would check it out when he got time. 2 months later and I'm still enjoying had washing, just a tige more than Garyn. I did have a dryer with a funny sound and found out 60 dollars and 5min. later like yourself that a spoon had gotten into the back of the dryer and was causeing the rucus. I'll never know how a spoon got into the back of my dryer. odd and irritatingly expensive. mike tells me it's flat rate service call.Nice. I'm guessing he would find a way to scratch the bill and tell the nice lady to have a good day. rip off!
