Gap in your Grin

The two teeth, one on bottom and one on top, were hanging on by a thread.
I noticed when he eats he avoids the front of his mouth altogether.
So today before we headed out for Spring Break adventures I talked him into letting me take a closer look. The replacement for the tooth on bottom had already shown up! It was time.
My stomach revolted. I really  hate pulling teeth. It makes me weak in the hands and my stomach feels morning sickish.  I grabbed some tissue and talked to him about tooth fairy money that would spend well in Disneyland.
The top tooth came out with a slight pull. No blood. However, before I could move on to that bottom tooth he was in full revolt! Crying and hiding his face with his hands.
What's wrong Cole?
I don't want you to pull it!
Why? The other one was easy!
I think I'll talk funny.

I coaxed him back onto the counter and talked to him about that poor tooth that was growing in the wrong spot because this tooth hadn't come out yet. Finally he relented. It also came out fairly easily, but there was blood.

The fairy left money for Disneyland.
I'd say if you're going to start losing all your teeth, THIS is the face that could pull that off!

A couple of firsts for Cole

On February 18, 2012
Cole Michael Browning
lost his first tooth.

 On March 5, 2012
Cole got to walk home from Kindergarten
by himself.
He was just beaming when he got home.

He's just so LOUD

This balmy winter has given my children every opportunity to fill up on Vitamin D.
They are outside all the time. Riding bikes, playing basketball, riding ripsticks, jumping on the trampoline. And today, having a picnic. Yup. A picnic with snack and friends on the trampoline like it was 80 degrees out.  No jackets either, so it really was a picnic.

So let's start to tie this all together.
Cole is loud.

Lots of you know that. You've been around him enough to have experienced his Grandma Bonnie-esque loud voice.  He's loud when he first wakes up, when he's headed to bed, and all in between.

So today he headed outside for a 48 degree play time with several friends he'd rounded up.  I laid Grace down for a nap in my room and I "read the paper on the couch". That's code for "read the paper until my eyelids are heavy with news and take a little nap."

Shortly into the nap I heard Cole, outside, "talking" to his friends. "HEY GUYS, COME IN HERE AND LET'S GET SOME BIKES!"  garage door goes up. bikes retrieved.

He continues to shout instructions and ideas.  They pedal far enough away his voice fades.
Ahhhh. Back to that nap.

Not so fast. He's back. He's in the driveway now.  "LET'S ALL GET SOME SNACKS TO HAVE A PICNIC. K GUYS? I'LL GET SOME SNACKS IN MY HOUSE!"

front door opens. slams.
he climbs onto the counter. grabs a snack.
front door slams.

"I GOT SNACKS! COME ON! LET'S GET ON MY TRAMPOLINE NOW WITH THIS BLANKET K GUYS!"

This nap is so over. I'm just lying there with my eyes closed wondering why he's so loud. Do other Mother's have to go tell their children to quiet down when they're outside? You know that cute little "inside voice vs. outside voice" parents remind their kids of? Well, he has neither. He has "blow out your eardrums voice," and "I love my Mom" voice (this ones low and smooth and only used on yours truly).

As Grandma would say, "It's a good thing he's cute!"

If the dress fits

We had family night tonight.
Asher taught us about the Word of Wisdom.
During his lesson Cole snuggled up next to me.

Cole: "Why can't I marry you"?
Me: (in a whisper) "I'm already married to Dad. Remember son?"
Cole: "But, I want to marry you."
Me: (still whispering and wanting to end the conversation) "Okay."
Cole: (big smile) "Do you have a wedding dress?"
Me: "Yes."
Cole: (raised eyebrow) "Good. You're gonna need it."

Luck of the Coley

Day 2:

Cole is kind of like a lucky charm.

It's no secret he loves me.
He always has- I am his Mother.

It's a daily occurrence to hear him say to me, "Mom you're a beautiful princess", or
"Mom you're my true love".

I feel lucky just having him around.

Dinner with Cole

It was quick sandwiches and veggies tonight.

We were missing Asher (w/scouts @ Cabela's) and Aidan (basketball practice).
Cole gave the prayer and that was the beginning.

Please note: I have typed Cole's words in his own tongue.
Cole: I was at Tylo's today and we were listening to music. Then I fell and I did the splits and I was like "Oh, my crotch." (said in a quiet, high voice with one eye squinched shut and the opposite eyebrow raised).
I turned my head to laugh and laugh.
Composure regained.
Me: Cole. Please don't say crotch at the Burdette's house.
Cole: Oh Mom I just said it in my head.

We all continued on our culinary journey.
I look at Cole and he is cross-legged on his chair like a little yogi. Thumb and pointer finger touching, chanting, "Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm".

Me: Cole, where did you learn that?
Cole: I didn't. I watched it on Little Biw.
Me: Huh?
Cole: Little Biw.
Chloe: Little Biw?
Cole: No, Little Biw.
Chloe: Little Bill?
Me: Little Bill!
Cole: No! Little Biw!
pause......
Me: Little Bear?
Cole: Yes, Little Biw!
Hey, Little Biw(Bill) and Little Biw(Bear) sound the same.

Chloe: Only when you say it.

Feed Croup an Avocado Shake

I love avocados, and I've heard tales of Avocado Shakes from Brazil.
I've always wanted to try one.
So today I did.
I got a recipe; avocados, sweetened condensed milk, ice, 2% milk.
This had to be good.
Don't even think about the calories in that. It's good fat remember.
Everyone was skeptical.

Turns out, Croupy Baby was my only taker.
Even Scott, the self-professed non-picky eater didn't like it.
So I ignored that tingle on my lip and itch in my throat and ate it up.

Cole asked for ice cream instead. I said yes.
And then he danced.
And I laughed and laughed.

The way I remember it...

Sitting at the kitchen table today sorting through hundreds of photos before I went digital,
Cole sat beside me.
I was searching for that one special picture of Chloe for my blog.
There were far too many to choose from.

Suddenly, Cole yells,
"Oh my gosh Mom! Look at this.  Dad is standing! How is he doing that?!"
My eyes filled with tears as I was reminded that he never knew that man.
It was before his time.
Unbelievable.
When I think of my husband and who he is, I remember dating him.  His constant adoration.
I remember being newlyweds in a little apartment living on love.
So happy to have him home at the end of the work day.
Greeting him at the door with my new little baby.
I remember moving into our first home and our growing family.
I remember the sound of his diesel truck as he pulled in the driveway and
the children yelling and running out to greet him.
I remember his big firm hugs and slow dances.
All of these things meld into more current memories and experiences and are one.
That is who he is to me.
To think that some of our children have never known that man is strange still.
Sometimes I find myself wanting to fill them in on the whole picture.  My picture.
Tell them what an awesome snow skier he was.  Or water skier.
Or rollerblader. Or basketball player. Or golfer.
Or how he pulled the oldest 2 children on sleds like a snow dog endlessly in the winter.
Or that he use to work 16 hour days.
The father my children know has become even stronger and more humble,
 gentler, and more forgiving.
His patience has grown tremendously. He is a fighter. A go-getter. A hardworker.

I looked at Cole and said, "Daddy use to be able to walk son. Before you were born."
He looked at me kind of unsure then pulled the picture out of Scott trying to pull the weight out of the ground in ToonTown.  He giggled, "Look at Dad trying to lift that weight".

Piano Man

He whines about it.

He complains.

I persist.

Seriously, it takes him only 5 minutes a day.
And he BEGGED me to teach him.
But, isn't he cute at the piano with his cheeks puffed full of air and the
light shining through his ears?
Play on boy, play on.

Bambi- Cole's version

Cole just came down from watching Bambi in my bedroom.
He climbs right up in my lap and holds my face with both his hands, as he does to make sure he has my full attention.

"What are you watching up there son?"
"Bambi.  It's kind of a sad movie because Bambi's Mom gets killed by a human."

*pause
(My face shows some concern and sadness.  He takes note of this and continues....)

"The human has a gun and shoots her.  But, ACTUALLY, she's not really dead.
The bullet went right over her head and she ducked down then it hits this really brave guy.
But he was not really a human. He was just a robot!"
Big smile, as if to say "All better Mom. No one is dead. I've changed Walt's vision of 1942 so you don't need to worry about Deer Mommies being shot.

Thanks son. I'm feeling a lot better about it.
My Hero.

A Little 'stache never hurt no one.

He came in from playing.
What happened? I asked
What? he responded.
Faking that he didn't remember a marker mustache being drawn on his face.
Alright. Get upstairs right now and shave! I said in my mean Mom voice.
He caught his reflection in the glass of the door.
He gasped in horror and touched the fakie mustache with his mouth drawn in an "O".
You are so busted I said with a half grin.
He gave me a wink and the two gun salute and ran out the door.

I guess a little stache never hurt no one.
Man that kid is funny.

Rain anyone?

We had a rainstorm yesterday.
It hit suddenly and really poured. I love the rain.
It also included some loud thunder and even some falling ice chunks.
I opened up the doors and listened to the rain.
I enjoyed watching my 2 Littles reactions to the rainstorm.

Cole got right out there and soaked it all in.
Grace. Terrified.
Cried herself right to sleep.

Too fast

They grow up so fast.
No really, they do.

Him too.
Look at the detail there on the upper lip.
Yep, he tried his little five-year-old hand at shaving.
Didn't go so well.

Those who didn't go to the party...

There was a Back 2 School Party tonight.
Chloe, Asher and Aidan were all invited.
They go every year and have some good food,
a fun D.J., and talk with friends.

But what about those of us who didn't get to go?

Well, here is what we did from 6:30-9:30

Cole got to take a bath.
With a cookie.
After all he's "being held back" as he tells his friends.
One more year to have him all to myself.
Located treat jar.
Reached a treat, but not the right treat.
Went in again for the starburst she was hoping for.
BINGO! Ate the starburst with the wrapper on.
Put a new doorknob set on the front door.
Including chiseling out the wood for the proper fit.
Man I feel like  a woman.
